ISO 14001

In one sentence

The international standard that sets the requirements for an environmental management system. It can be certified.

What it is

An environmental management system is the way an organization identifies its impacts on the environment, sets objectives, assigns owners and checks whether it delivers. ISO 14001 says what that system must have.

The standard assesses how you manage. It does not set performance levels or produce a figure.

The current edition

ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026 and replaces the 2015 edition.

Organizations certified to the previous edition have a transition period. Certification bodies talk about three years, with end dates that vary between them. Confirm yours with your certifier.

ISO 14001 and ISO 14064

They get confused often and they do different things.

ISO 14001 certifies a management system. ISO 14064 is for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions, and what you obtain with it is a verification statement for an inventory.

Having ISO 14001 does not mean you have measured your carbon footprint. And measuring it does not require being certified.
