Which ones
A carbon footprint counts seven: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride.
They are the same in the GHG Protocol and in ISO 14064-1.
How much each one weighs in Chile
Carbon dioxide is the most abundant. In the 2022 national inventory it accounted for 76% of total emissions. Methane followed with 14%, nitrous oxide with 5% and fluorinated gases with another 5%.
How they are added
Each gas warms differently, so they are not added in plain tonnes. They are converted to CO2 equivalent using their global warming potential.
Where they show up in a company
Carbon dioxide comes mostly from burning fuels and from electricity. Fluorinated gases usually appear in cooling equipment, as refrigerant leaks.
