Chile has the data to lead on climate and isn't using it

Every time a Chilean company pays its electricity bill, fills up a vehicle or hires a freight service, that invoice goes through the SII, Chile's tax authority, in electronic form, with tax ID, amount, description and date. Everything needed to calculate its carbon footprint already exists, is already digitized and is already in the hands of the State. And yet the vast majority of companies still measure their emissions in spreadsheets, typing by hand what the State already has. Or, more often still, not measuring at all.

I've spent more than ten years working in software startups, and the last few building Grumbic, a platform that automates exactly that measurement. What strikes me most is not how hard the problem is, but how solved it already is in Chile without anyone having noticed.

Calculating a carbon footprint has two halves. One is knowing how much you consumed: how many kWh, how many liters, how many kilometers. The other is converting that into emissions using a factor. The second half was solved a long time ago, everywhere: there are public, well-maintained factor databases that anyone can use. The first half is the expensive one, the slow one, the one that turns measuring into a project instead of a routine. And that is precisely the half Chile has solved. Electronic invoicing has been mandatory for every company since 2018, and the Chilean standard is among the most complete in the world.

Elsewhere the picture is different. In Europe, the debate around sustainability reporting is, at its core, a debate about how to get the data: companies chase suppliers, run surveys and hire consultants to reconstruct information nobody has in order. In the United States there isn't even nationwide electronic invoicing. Chile has already solved the most expensive step, which is capturing the data.

The problem is that these two halves don't talk to each other. Invoices live in the tax world and emission factors live in the sustainability world, and there is nothing in between. A company that wants to measure ends up downloading an Excel from one side, looking up a factor on the other, and pasting everything into a third spreadsheet, with all the room for error that implies. The data exists, but bridging the two worlds is a job that today gets done by a very patient intern or a very well-funded consultancy.

The opportunity is obvious when you look at it with an engineer's eyes. If every invoice already carries the type of consumption and the amount, and if emission factors are already published, calculating a footprint is a multiplication a system can do on its own, every month, without anyone having to remember. Measuring emissions would stop being an annual project and become an automatic by-product of invoicing, exactly the way accounting stopped being a ledger when software arrived. This isn't science fiction. It's integration.

And it matters now, not in ten years. Large buyers, in Chile and abroad, are already asking their suppliers for verifiable emissions data. Whoever has it ready exports with less friction and closes contracts faster. Whoever doesn't will show up late with a spreadsheet nobody can audit. The country that understands this first turns an obligation into an advantage.

Chile doesn't need more data or more laws to lead on climate. It needs to connect what it already has. The infrastructure is built and the technical capability exists. What's missing is deciding that measuring shouldn't cost more than invoicing. Climate leadership, in this case, doesn't need to be built, it needs to be plugged in.
